Case study

A configurable rule engine that cut product launch time for an insurer

Rating and eligibility rules moved out of code and into a versioned, business-editable rule engine, so underwriting teams can change products without a release.

The challenge

Underwriting and rating rules were hard-coded across several services. Every product tweak, even a threshold change, needed developer time, regression testing and a full release.

Product teams waited weeks for changes, and nobody could easily answer which version of a rule had priced a given policy.

Our solution

We designed a rule engine where rules are stored as versioned, typed definitions and evaluated by a stateless .NET Core service. A React rule editor lets business analysts create, test and submit rules for approval.

Each evaluation is logged with the exact rule versions used, giving underwriters and auditors a complete trail. RabbitMQ distributes rule updates to every service without downtime.

  • Business-editable rules with draft, test and approval workflow
  • Point-in-time replay of any historical decision
  • Zero-downtime rule publishing across services
